Cassie Gaines

Cassie Gaines (1948-1977) was an American singer and songwriter best known as a member of the Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. Born in Gainesville, Florida, she was the sister of fellow band member Steve Gaines. Cassie contributed to the group primarily as a backing vocalist and was known for her distinctive harmonies. Lynyrd Skynyrd emerged in the early 1970s, blending rock, blues, and country influences. Notable works featuring Cassie include the iconic albums "Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd" (1973) and "Second Helping" (1974), which produced hits like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird." Tragically, Cassie's career was cut short when she died in a plane crash on October 20, 1977, alongside several band members. Her contributions to the band's vocal arrangements and performances helped shape the group's sound and left a lasting legacy in the Southern rock genre. Cassie Gaines is remembered not only for her talent but also for her role in a band that became a cultural touchstone in American rock music.
